Raul is a Certified Tax Specialist with the State Bar Board of Specialization. He has extensive experience across a wide range of international, federal, state and local tax issues, including complex commercial transactions and tax controversy matters. Raul’s expertise in planning for domestic and foreign tax laws and his experience in tax controversy disputes expands AlvaradoSmith’s cross-border transaction capabilities. He advises U.S.-based and foreign clients and businesses on tax advice under the international provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, provides analysis and advice on U.S. inbound and outbound commercial and financial transactions, and comprehensive wealth preservation and asset protection planning, focusing on the international tax law issues related to such planning. Raul also helps clients comply with U.S. tax reporting obligations for foreign financial assets through IRS and FTB voluntary disclosure programs, as well as complying with Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) requirements.

Raul is fluent in Spanish, making him an effective adviser to clients investing and doing business in Latin America. With a clear understanding of the nuances of U.S. tax laws and their interrelation with international provisions, Raul adeptly resolves the legal, regulatory, cultural and linguistic challenges involved in international tax planning matters and controversies.

In alignment with the AlvaradoSmith’s mission and values, Raul believes in giving back to his community. He volunteers his time with the Foster Youth Education Fund and serves as General Counsel to both the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association and Latinos in Finance.
