International Law

AlvaradoSmith’s International Law practice group assists international clients in a wide range of international business matters. Many of our International Law attorneys have served in key roles such as California’s Honorary Ambassador to both Ensenada and Tijuana, Mexico, and the White House Office of Hispanic Affairs.
AlvaradoSmith was awarded the International Business Award by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and has been recognized by several organizations and publications for its excellence in this particular field. Further the Firm has many attorneys who are bilingual in languages including Spanish, French and Korean.
Our International Law Practice Group has a particular emphasis on Latin America with over 20 years of experience working on transactions and development projects between the United States and Mexico, and the Firm has also coordinated and led business and governmental trade delegations to and from Mexico and China.
Many of the group's attorneys have lived in the Latin American region and have had their own businesses there. This knowledge of Latin business customs allows our attorneys to communicate, negotiate and successfully represent U.S. businesses expanding into the region or looking for strategic alliances, a direct presence in the U.S. or representation in litigation.
Our International Law practice group routinely represents parties including financial institutions, manufacturers and businesses, exporters/importers, investors, developers and foreign state agencies in international litigation matters. Our team of attorneys is well-versed in the complex issues that arise in such disputes such as jurisdictional/extraterritoriality issues, conflicts of laws issues and the gathering of evidence abroad. We have acted as co-counsel on behalf of clients involved in concurrent global proceedings in various foreign jurisdictions throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
Our team of attorneys works with and manages local counsel in foreign jurisdictions in a manner that serves the best business interests of our clients in the following practice areas:
  • International joint ventures and strategic alliances
  • International contracts, including negotiating business transactions in bilingual agreements
  • Structuring agency arrangements
  • Litigation, including working with local counsel in commercial litigation
  • Consulting on due diligence of foreign business opportunities
  • Representation and advice before governmental agencies
  • Corporate formation, compliance and governance matters
  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Startup companies
